Few performers can get a stadium crowd to sing the first line of a song written in 1973, yet Billy Joel has been doing it for more than fifty years. His official biography counts more than 150 million records sold and 33 Top 40 hits, so the public record is unusually stable for someone with his tabloid footprint.

- Born in the Bronx on May 9, 1949 (Billy Joel’s official biography)
- Began piano lessons in 1953 and joined his first band, The Echoes, in 1963 (Billy Joel’s official timeline)
- Released his debut solo album, Cold Spring Harbor, in 1971 (Billy Joel’s official timeline)
That timeline has a consistent shape: early sessions, club bands, a solo deal, and then a run of songs that became radio standards.
Notable achievements
- 5 Grammy Awards from 23 Grammy nominations (Billy Joel’s official biography)
- Grammy Legend Award in 1990, Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Johnny Mercer Award in 2001 (Billy Joel’s official biography)
- Tony Award for Movin’ Out (CNN’s fast-facts file)
Fans comparing Billy Joel with other legacy artists can use one quick filter: five Grammys and 23 nominations put him in a tier that few pop songwriters reach.
The pattern: every stage of his career added a new audience, from piano bars to arenas to Broadway via Movin’ Out.
What song does Billy Joel refuse to sing?
Billy Joel has adjusted his setlist over the years, dropping certain songs for personal or audience-specific reasons. He has said he no longer performs “Only the Good Die Young” for certain audiences, and he has stopped singing “Honesty” at times due to personal distaste. No single “song he refuses to sing” is designated in his official biography.
Is Billy Joel a nice person in real life?
Billy Joel is known for philanthropy, including donations to music education, and fans often report positive interactions with him at concerts. His reputation for being approachable and generous is documented through media accounts and public events, though his official biography does not include a character assessment.
Did Billy Joel ever meet Elton John?
Yes. Billy Joel and Elton John have performed together on multiple occasions, and the friendship is treated as public record in Joel’s official timeline.
The pairing makes sense on paper: two piano-driven hitmakers who both became arena acts in the same era and never really left the road.
Why this matters: the Joel-John link is part of how Billy Joel stayed in front of live audiences between studio albums.
Will Billy Joel be performing in 2026?
Not yet confirmed. No verified 2026 dates have appeared on Billy Joel’s official channels, and his official newsroom is the right place to watch for announcements.
The live schedule still revolves around Madison Square Garden, where the residency began in January 2014, according to the same official newsroom.
Upcoming tour plans
- The residency began in January 2014 and has been described by his official site as record-breaking (Billy Joel’s official newsroom)
- A final MSG residency show has been announced (Billy Joel’s official newsroom)
- Any new dates will be posted on billyjoel.com and ticketing platforms first (Billy Joel’s official newsroom)
For anyone booking travel around a 2026 show, the risk is practical rather than speculative: no ticket can be secured until an official on-sale date exists.
The catch: “no confirmed dates” is not the same as “no tour.” It just means the calendar has not caught up with the residency yet.
How many marriages and children does Billy Joel have?
Billy Joel has been married four times, according to Britannica’s biography of Joel. His current wife is Alexis Roderick, and he has three daughters.
List of marriages
- Elizabeth Weber, married in 1973 and divorced in 1982, according to Music Guide’s artist biography
- Christie Brinkley, married in 1985 and divorced in 1994 (Music Guide’s artist biography)
- Katie Lee, his third wife, ended in divorce (Britannica’s biography of Joel)
- Alexis Roderick, married in 2015 (CNN’s fast-facts file)
Children and their mothers
- Alexa Ray Joel, daughter with Christie Brinkley (Music Guide’s artist biography)
- Della Rose and Remy Blue Joel, daughters with Alexis Roderick (CNN’s fast-facts file)
The pattern: two of his four marriages produced children, and both younger daughters arrived during his current marriage.
Who was the love of Billy Joel’s life?
The closest thing to a public consensus points to Christie Brinkley. The factual anchor is simple: she is the wife he was married to from 1985 to 1994, according to Music Guide’s artist biography, and she is the mother of his first daughter.
Billy Joel has never published a ranking of his relationships, so the rest is interpretation. The official record gives fans the dates, the names, and the children; the ranking is left to the listener.
The nuance: the “love of his life” question is a fan narrative, not a documented fact. It says more about how people connect to his songs than about anything in the archive.

What the record says
The fastest way to separate biography from rumor is to let the primary record speak.
Billy Joel has sold more than 150 million records worldwide.
Billy Joel’s official biography
Billy Joel won a Tony Award for Movin’ Out.
Billy Joel has been married four times.
Why this matters: when three separate reference points agree, the story stops being tabloid material and becomes a documented biography.
Why Billy Joel still matters
The official numbers give fans something rare: a stable record that survives the noise around the personal life. The official biography, the CNN fast-facts file, and Britannica all point to the same core story — a songwriter with real honors, real longevity, and a live career that still fills the room. For fans planning a trip around a possible 2026 tour, the choice is clear: wait for an official on-sale date before booking flights and hotels, or risk building a vacation around a show that may not exist.
