How can I tell if my pet is overheating?
Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans — they rely on panting and paw pads to cool down. Signs of heat stress include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, red gums, vomiting, or collapse. If you notice these, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet immediately. Brachycephalic breeds (like pugs and bulldogs) are especially vulnerable.
What’s the best way to keep pets cool at home?
Ensure fresh, cool water is always available — add ice cubes if you like. Provide shaded areas, ideally with good airflow, and consider a damp towel for your pet to lie on. Never leave pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes; temperatures can soar to dangerous levels within seconds. For outdoor pets, check that their shelter stays shaded all day.
Can I shave my dog in summer to keep them cool?
No — a dog’s coat insulates against heat and sunburn. Instead, brush out loose fur regularly and leave the coat intact to help regulate body temperature naturally.
What temperature is unsafe for walking a dog?
If the air temperature is above 28°C, or the ground feels hot to your hand for more than five seconds, it’s too hot for a walk. Stick to early morning or evening.
How can I cool my pet without a pool?
Use a shallow kiddie pool with cool water, a damp towel for them to lie on, or a cooling mat. You can also freeze a water bottle wrapped in a tea towel for them to lean against.
